Dear Friends and Alumnae of Hwa Nan
Thank you for your history of support of our college. It is donors like you who enable us to maintain a unique asset of Chinese higher education. It is donors like you who enable us to carry out our century old motto ”°Having received, I ought to give”±.
We are writing you now to tell you about exciting changes and challenges facing Hwa Nan as it expands to better accommodate our growing programs and student body and to meet new government standards which aim to enhance the quality of Chinese higher education. When you think back to Hwa Nan's tiny campus, its lack of dormitories and of space for sports and recreation, its cramped library and absence of a large meeting room, then you will understand the excitement and enthusiasm all of us have about the changes that soon will take shape. Achieving them will not be easy, the demands are large. We very much hope you can help us now to yet again create a new Hwa Nan.
Since its start in 1985, the reborn Hwa Nan has grown dramatically in quantity and quality. It currently has nine departments, the four original programs plus five departments added after 2000. The student body has dramatically increased, from 494 in 1987 to 2408 today. With growing enrollment and programs, the college has expanded beyond the original Yantai Shan campus, moving several departments to rented buildings not far away then adding one small campus ten minutes walk away. The current total space is only 5.1acres of land, to which the college has no permanent property rights. This does not meet the minimum campus requirement newly set by the Education Ministry of China, nor can it hold new facilities now also required, from larger library to dormitories to recreational facilities. Thus Hwa Nan found itself faced with the daunting task of acquiring new location and constructing a whole new physical plant.
After hearing stories of the many years of unselfish contributions by our college to women's education, the Governor of Fujian Province decided to donate a piece of land at no cost that satisfies the Government land requirements and can accommodate full set of new modern facilities. We now become the only private institution located in newly developed University City , neighborhood to several prestigious public universities.
Hwa Nan is committed to build this new campus over the next three years, creating an integrated educational environment for the entire student body. The new campus has 27.95 acres of land with a total construction area of 60,000 square meters, a size that must stun all of you used to our cozy but cramped hilltop and the long walks from dorms. This space is ample to house classrooms, administration, labs, library, foreign guest house and dormitories, with an adjacent sports and recreation complex for students, faculty and staff.
The college will this summer begin construction of the four classroom buildings and two lab buildings. Over the following two years, the plan calls for completion of the new campus. We are deeply grateful for your past support of Hwa Nan. Now we ask your help for the construction of this new Hwa Nan, one you will be proud to claim as your own. You will thus enable us to fulfill its goal of excellence in meeting the changing educational needs of students and society with the best possible facilities and curriculum, learning environment and faculty abilities. We thereby strive to enable women graduates to succeed in an ever changing and more demanding world. Hwa Nan's reputation then will continue to be not only the outstanding private college in Fujian but also a nationally recognized asset to China .
The chart of estimated costs below makes clear that realizing this bright future will not be cheap and Hwa Nan has always been poor, operating more on devotion and optimism than on cash. Yet together we can achieve indeed achieve miracle.
