Before the 110th anniversary celebration of Hwa Nan, a seminar in the Education Philosophy of Hwa Nan was held on the afternoon of Oct. 17, attended by Council Chair and President Su Mengna, Vice President Huang Jie, Deputy Secretary Ren Jianhong, Vice President Zheng Youguo, Consultant Lin Benchun, alumna Ma Xiufa, alumna He Xiaozhi and the other faculty and staff members.

President Su spoke first. She recalled in the 110 years’ history of Hwa Nan, one after another Hwa Nan people always stay true to their original mission.  They overcome many difficulties, make sacrifice and dedication, and create miracles in the women’s higher education of China.  She stressed the importance of the inheritance of Hwa Nan 100 year old education philosophy and encouraged attendees to start from the minor tasks, take solid steps, and influence students to accept, learn and carry forward Hwa Nan spirit, and make self reliance, openness, diligence, and dedication be the distinctive features of Hwa Nan graduates.

Following her speech, seventeen representatives centered around college mottos of “having received, we ought to give” and “self reliance, openness, diligence, and dedication” used in two different periods of time and talked about their comprehension of the education philosophies of Hwa Nan, which include“without love there is no education”, “teachers are like burning candles and their ethics cast light”, “developing a fair lady to forge a nuclear family and to build a harmonious society”, and “be grateful, return the kindness, and make unselfish dedication”.  These are the cultural specificities induced from long time education practice of Hwa Nan, the main contents of Hwa Nan Spirit “having received, we ought to give” and the inherent impetus for the reform and renovation of Hwa Nan.  These philosophies direct faculty and staff to be grateful, responsible, courageous, and devoted to make modest contribution to nurturing capable young people well-prepared to join the socialist cause.

The seminar in Education Philosophy of Hwa Nan is not only in-depth review and reflection of Hwa Nan 110 year education history and experience, but also a comprehensive summary of Hwa Nan spirit and philosophy.  We shall follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, inherit and carry forward Hwa Nan spirit of “having received, we ought to give” and Hwa Nan 100 year old education philosophy, pool strengths of all faculty and students, and deepen reform so as to bring out the full potential of the college and to bring the various works of Hwa Nan to a new stage.
